Item Restricted Source mechanism of earthquake in Peru(Springer, 2001-10) Tavera, Hernando; Buforn, E.The source mechanism of 19 earthquakes that occurred in Peru (1990–1996) is studied using broad band data. Focal mechanisms are obtained using polarities of P wave and body wave form inversion. Shallow earthquakes show complex source time functions, intermediate and deep depth shocks have simpler ones. Stress distributions have been obtained from focal mechanisms estimated in this study and previous studies. Shallow earthquakes show reverse faulting with an ENE-WSW to E-W oriented pressure axes. Intermediate depth shocks indicate horizontal extension on E-W direction, normal to the Peru-Chilean trench. Earthquakes with foci at very deep depth show horizontal extension in the E-W direction in Peru-Brazil and N-S in Peru-Bolivia borders. This difference in stress orientation may indicate a different origin for deep activity at each region.Item Restricted The Arequipa (Peru) earthquake of june 23, 2001(Springer, 2002-04) Tavera, Hernando; Buforn, E.; Bernal Esquia, Yesenia Isabel; Antayhua Vera, Yanet Teresa; Vilcapoma, LuisThe Arequipa earthquake of 23 June 2001 has been the largest earthquake (Mw = 8.3) occurred in the last century in southern Peru with a maximum intensity of VIII (MM scale). Focal mechanisms of main shock and three larger aftershocks have been studied, showing thrusting solutions for main shock and two aftershocks and normal motion for the event of July, 5. The rupture area has been obtained from distribution of aftershocks. The occurrence of the Arequipa earthquake is related with the convergence process between the Nazca and South Americaplates.
